Haili Newton is #12 and a Senior athlete on the Lady Harvester Volleyball team. She also throws discus on the Lady Harvester track team.
What does it mean for Haili to be named Athlete of the Week?
“‘Athlete of the Week’ to me means to be chosen by hard work and shows the effort I am putting into this season,” Newton said.
One thing people may not know about her is that she is a twin.
Her main goal this year is for the volleyball team to make the playoffs.
“My goals are to make it to the playoffs because we have a really good group of talented girls and I believe we can make it,” Newton said.
After high school, Haili plans to attend college but is not sure of what she will major in just yet. Her favorite subject is English.
“My favorite subject is English because I love to write,” Newton said.
Here is what Lady Harvester Head Volleyball Coach Kaylee Samulowitz had to say about Haili:
“Haili has been absolutely dominant this season so far. Our entire offense stems from her and what she does on the floor and she has been consistently excellent thus far. Haili is one of the hardest workers on the team and has the talent to show for it. She's not the loudest kid in our program, but her leadership speaks for itself. She was a unanimous captain vote, which I think says a lot about how the team feels about her. Any coach would be lucky to coach a kid like Haili, and I'm really thankful that I am getting that opportunity for her senior season,” Samulowitz said.
Ryan Resendiz is a Senior athlete on the Harvester Cross Country team. He also plays for the Harvester Soccer team. He placed 12th in the first cross country meet of the season at Pecos.
What does it mean for Ryan to be named Athlete of the Week?
“It’s amazing to be Athlete of the Week because it shows my hard work has paid off and it’s showing,” Resendiz said.
One thing people may not know about him is he loves to weld.
His main goal this season is to set many personal records.
“My goal for the rest of the season is to have a bunch of PRs,” Resendiz said.
He is also a member of the Harvester track team and competes in long distance events. His plans after high school are to go to a college or trade school.
His favorite subject is math.
“My favorite subject is math because there are always things in the real world that use math as well,” Resendiz said.
Here is what Harvester Cross Country Head Coach Otis Chunn had to say about Ryan:
“Ryan is the team leader and is most deserving of being recognized. His work effort sets a high standard for his teammates to follow. He has shown up and is ready to challenge for a top spot in district 4-4A. He is showing steady improvement. He has set a goal to get to state. I think he will get there. The team is responding to his work ethic. He is a leader on and off the track. Good things lie ahead, and Ryan will represent the Green and Gold well. Great example for others to follow.” Chunn said.
Congratulations to Haili and Ryan on being what a great Harvester student-athlete is all about!
