The Pampa girls' golf team led off the week of tournaments on Thursday at the Tulia golf course. This was the first competitive round of golf for the girls' team. The tournament got rescheduled due to the wind, but we still ran into it. Freshman Sailor Baldridge and Freshman Cameron Curtis did their best to keep their ball under the wind. With 25 mph sustained and 40 mph gusts it is tough to play golf. The girls toughed it out and played a good round.
The Junior Varsity Boy's golf played Friday in Tulia. With the temperatures down and the winds up, the boys were able to compete with other Varsity schools. Sophomore John West and Senior Justin Chavez played well. Their short game started to come through in the later holes of the round. Freshman Landry Claassen got a taste of his first round of competitive golf and Senior Dayton Adams played well, posting a team best score of an 87. Head Coach Jason Burklow was super proud of the boys.
The Varsity Boys went to Lubbock this weekend to compete at the Regional Preview at Shadow Hills golf course.
“I don't know what it is about the Regional Preview, but it is always very cold on those mornings. The boys played well over the weekend. Starting to see some consistency in our game,” Burklow said.
Junior Brycen Lewis and Senior Bryson Williams played well around the greens but putting up scores in the 90's and Senior Jayden Fossett and Junior Brady Smith posting scores in the mid 80's.
The JV boys played in Canyon at the Randall Raider Rumble at Palo Duro Creek golf course. This is a fun format where boys are partnered up and play low ball nine holes and the alternate shot nine holes. West and Chavez teamed up and played well in the alternate shot. Williams and Claassen teamed up and played very well together. Both teams shot in the mid to high 90's.
The Varsity boys played at the Borger Invitational this weekend. This is a two-course tournament where they play Phillips on day one and Borger Country club day two. This tournament was the best showing the boys have put on yet. Adams posted his second round in the 80's shooting an 87 at Phillips and Lewis shot his best round of the year at the Country club with a 91. Smith played his best tournament in two years posting an 83 and a 77. This would put Brady at third place overall individually for the tournament. Fossett, the tournament winner, shot a 77 the first round and a masterful 69 the second round.
“Jayden was four shots down from the leader at the beginning of day two. He stayed within his game and came back from four strokes to tie the leader at the end of 18 holes. This forced a playoff hole where Jayden would come out on top birdieing the first hole and winning the tournament,” Burklow said.
“Again, super proud of our boys and the work they are putting in. The boys team finished second overall as a team for the tournament,” Burklow said.
This is just the early rounds of the golf season, and we are starting to play well on both the girls and the boys' teams. This week girls head to Borger for the WT Golf tournament, JV will be at Ross Rogers for the Amarillo High Tournament, and Varsity boys will be in Seminole over the weekend.
