The Pampa Hustlin’ Harvesters (3-3) hosted the Bushland Falcons on Tuesday where they tallied 13 deflections and 10 steals en route to a 58-55 win.

“It was a very competitive game throughout last night,” Head Coach Braydon Barker said.

“Neither team ever got up by more than 5 points. Bushland is a solid program and played really well last night. It was a good hard fought win for us.”

The Harvesters stout defense also racked up four blocks and 13 points off turnovers.

“We always chart our deflections every game,” Barker said. “We put a huge emphasis on trying to get at least 12 deflections per game. Anytime we can get more deflections and steals than our opponent, we have a good chance to win.”

Senior Jose Alonzo, who had one of those deflections and two steals to go along with his five points, two rebounds and four assists, has been a force on the Harvesters for three years.

Jose Alonzo

“Jose is a three-year starter for us,” Barker said. “He plays really good defense, and actually leads our team in deflections so far this year. He uses his length in our zone to cause havoc for the other team. He is also very versatile with his size and speed, so he can play the top or the bottom in our zone. He is a leader on and off the court for our team.”

The Harvesters take the road to Childress this weekend where they will compete in a tournament featuring teams like Wellington, Lampasas and others.

“Childress is going to be a great tournament for us heading into district play,” Barker said. “If we can get by Wellington, we will play Lampasas. They have a 7 footer that is extremely skilled. That will be a fun matchup for us if we can get there. There are several other great teams in the tournament that will prepare us for our tough district.”
