Promoting Academic Success for Students is an intervention program at Wilson Elementary designed to reach all students in an inclusion setting.
Trained mentors from the community come and volunteer 30 minutes to an hour each week to “Adopt-A-Classroom”.
The mentors help assist the children with various subject areas. They may take a small group of children aside and work with them more in-depth or assist the students as they work at their desks. Sometimes teachers will use the mentors to assist during a science experiment or an art project when extra hands are really needed.
This approach allows more students to reap the benefits the mentors have to offer the students:
“
Having an extra heart and pair of hands in the classroom benefits the children and reaches more children.” —-Lynda Dyer & Lena Mendoza,1st grade teachers
“I think that the mentors coming into the classroom help build relationships with students. Also, I believe that it is a better approach to serving any and all students that need help and not just serving a few.”—-Kimberly Brown, 5th grade teacher
