Many of you may have heard about the wreck that occurred last week with one of our Pampa ISD school busses. When I received the call that one of our busses had been in an accident, my heart sank and I immediately began praying for the safety of our students, staff, and other individuals involved. I arrived on the scene within just a few minutes, and I was amazed at the activity unfolding before my eyes. The Pampa Police Department, EMS, and Fire Department were meeting the needs of everyone. They were directing traffic, assisting school personnel and tending to students who had been understandably shaken up by the accident. The Pampa Junior High Principal, Jennifer Studebaker, and the Director of Transportation, Stuart Smith, were managing the students and parents with a calm and confident tone. The teachers, parents and students were patient and supportive throughout the entire process.
After we confirmed that everyone was safe, after the last student was dropped off at Pampa Junior High, and after all evidence of the event had been towed and cleared away, I sat in my car and reflected on the entire incident. I said another prayer of thanks and even said out-loud to myself---We Were Blessed Today! The safety and security of our students and staff is something that I think about multiple times a day, every day. In today’s world, it is just something that must be on the minds of so many people in our line of work. When one is charged with the welfare and safety of over 4000 people, it is and should be something one takes very seriously. This incident reminded me that it takes a community of caring individuals to work together to keep each other safe. And that is exactly what happened on October 12, 2017 in Pampa, Texas.
I want to THANK the Pampa PD, EMS, Fire Department, and the staff of Pampa ISD’s Junior High and Transportation department for their professionalism, preparedness, poise, and compassion during this incident. Once again, I am grateful to live and work in a community with people who have such purpose, passion, and pride. Blessings to you all. Tanya Larkin Superintendent
