School Health Advisory Council
Research shows that healthy children do better in school - from attendance and behavior to academics and overall performance. The Pampa ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) works with the district to help school communities support good health and academic achievement. What is a SHAC?A School Health Advisory Council ( SHAC ) is a school board appointed advisory group of individuals who represent different segments of the community. By law, a majority of the members must be persons who are parents of students enrolled in the district and who are not employed by the district. The Pampa ISD SHAC is made up of parents, community members, and school staff working together to improve the health of all students and families through coordinated school health programs. Role of the School Health Advisory CouncilAdvocacy The School Health Advisory Council provides visibility for school health within the school system and community; works to ensure that sufficient resources are allocated to school health; intervene when individuals from within or without the school seek to eliminate or unfavorably alter the school health program; facilitates understanding between schools and community segments. Program Planning The School Health Advisory Council ensures that professionals who directly influence student health meet regularly to learn what their colleagues are doing, shares teaching strategies, problem solves, participates in curriculum selection and adaptation; provides a forum for discussion of health issues; facilitates innovation in health education. How can I help?Become knowledgeable about district efforts to create healthy learning environments. Work with your school's PTO/PTA and principal to help implement practices that promote healthy lifestyles for our children. Attend District SHAC meetings.
